Researching an expired domain with traffic and backlinks means answering two separate questions: what links are still useful, and what visitor evidence can you verify? A large link total cannot establish traffic, and a traffic estimate cannot certify the links.

Start with names fitting a defined project, then build a record of observed links, traffic sources and current purchase conditions.

Build and verify the shortlist

Find candidates through relevant discovery services or current auctions. Record the exact name, source and check date. Verify the actual registrar or listing route before committing.

ICANN’s typical gTLD lifecycle explains why expiry does not mean immediate release. Missing DNS or registration data is not a registration-availability confirmation.

The auction verification guide helps establish the route.

Inspect the sources behind link totals

Majestic’s glossary explains its link metrics and dataset concepts. Record provider and scope before comparing counts. Referring domains and individual backlinks describe different things.

Open significant source pages and check whether links remain present. Inspect surrounding text, anchors and old destination URLs. A useful reference to a former guide deserves different consideration from repeated unrelated promotional links.

For hypothetical candidates, 3,000 links from five sources and 300 links from forty sources suggest different inspection priorities. The totals alone do not confirm either candidate’s quality.

The metrics workflow helps organise that review.

Identify measured and estimated traffic separately

Ahrefs’ organic-traffic documentation describes a modelled estimate rather than an exact count of visitors. Public estimates can be useful for comparisons, with their limits kept visible.

For owner-provided analytics, obtain appropriate authorised access and recent records. Google’s Analytics permissions guidance explains access control. You cannot inspect an arbitrary unowned site’s private account.

Record the period, channel breakdown and any dependence on one page or campaign. Direct, referral, paid and organic visits are different sources. If suitable records are unavailable, keep traffic unverified rather than budgeting on assumed visitors.

Compare traffic with the intended subject

Review archived content and linked topics. Ask whether the new project would serve the same reader need. A past audience for one subject may have little relevance to an unrelated new site.

ObservationQuestion
Links to specific old resourcesCan you provide relevant original content for those subjects?
Traffic dominated by one campaignWould it continue after the transaction?
Missing recent recordsWhat remains unproven in the purchase case?

Historical evidence does not automatically transfer content rights, rankings or visitor behaviour with the domain registration.

Set a limit from verified benefits

Check naming risks, purchase charges, renewal terms and work required after acquisition. Use the valuation workflow to develop a range.

Finish with observed links, available traffic evidence, missing information and the next decision. The useful acquisition is a suitable name whose complete commitment can be justified without guaranteed inherited traffic.
