An email spam check helps investigate why a message may be rejected, deferred or placed in a junk folder. Different receiving systems combine their own signals and policies, so one favourable test cannot guarantee universal inbox delivery.

Review the sending route, recipient expectations and actual outcomes together. Low opens alone do not prove a filter decision, and removing a supposed trigger word does not resolve every problem.

Check the delivered message and route

Record the actual sending service, visible From identity and message version. Test the real platform output rather than only the text draft, because delivery configuration, formatting and tracking links can differ.

Mail-tester provides a test-message workflow. Read its FAQ for scope and score interpretation. A scale where higher is favourable should not be confused with another filter’s raw spam score.

Our walkthrough explains that process. Keep test material and report sharing appropriate to the service’s privacy conditions.

Verify authentication for the relevant identity

Gmail’s sender guidance documents authentication and sending requirements, including additional bulk-sender conditions. Use current provider instructions for SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment.

Check receiving authentication results rather than only whether a DNS record exists. Authentication contributes identity evidence; it does not certify that recipients want the message or that its content is harmless.

Our DNS guide explains service settings. The responsible sending provider may control infrastructure information outside the domain owner’s ordinary zone.

Review permission and recipient controls

Record how recipients joined the list and what communication they expect. Keep suppression and opt-out handling functional. For UK marketing, consult the ICO’s electronic-mail guidance.

Address invalid destinations and complaints using observed evidence. Do not apply an arbitrary three-month deletion rule based only on opens; privacy features and the campaign’s context can affect that observation.

Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection documentation describes background retrieval of remote content. A tracking-image request therefore is not necessarily a person reading the email. Choose measurements suited to the question rather than assuming every recorded open means engagement.

Assess content honestly

Use clear subjects, recognisable identity and working destinations. Explain the offer accurately. There is no universal banned-word list in which removing “free” or “buy” guarantees placement.

Review the particular findings in the diagnostic tool and compare message rendering with the intended action. An unnecessary change made solely to improve a score can make the email less useful.

Investigate outcomes and verify corrections

Separate permanent rejection, temporary deferral and observed junk placement. Preserve relevant response codes, dates and provider messages. A clean public blocklist check does not reveal every private receiver policy.

Our assessment checklist covers the broader review. Recheck the relevant route after a change and continue monitoring complaints and delivery results rather than treating a score as final clearance.
