Buying a domain for flipping requires an exit case before the purchase. Identify who could use the name, what evidence supports the price and how much you can afford while waiting for a buyer. A low registration charge does not create a reliable return.

Use the acquisition checklist below to keep those decisions connected. The aim is a name you can market honestly at a cost the portfolio can carry.

Describe a plausible resale use

Evaluate spelling, pronunciation, meaning and extension fit. Identify independent buyer types instead of relying on one brand owner whose identity the name resembles.

For a hypothetical outdoor-service name, plausible uses might include equipment repair or a specialist publication. That is a naming exercise, not evidence of buyer demand. Compare inexpensive alternatives those users could choose.

Our appraisal worksheet helps collect relevant completed sales and explain the differences. Avoid buying solely because software shows a larger estimate than the asking price.

Choose the actual acquisition route

Confirm whether the name is available for registration, offered by an owner or in an auction process. A registrar supplies registration management; a hosting company is not automatically the most suitable acquisition service.

ICANN’s registrar directory helps identify covered providers. Our auction guide explains existing-name routes.

Check exact status and terms directly. An expired date or offline website does not establish that ordinary checkout will acquire the domain.

Investigate history and complete costs

Review previous website uses, important source links and possible identity conflicts. Keep traffic estimates separate from verified evidence. Buying a registration does not include the former owner’s articles or business.

Record purchase charges, renewals, research and expected selling expenses. For an illustrative £400 allowance, reserving £50 for acquisition costs and £75 for holding leaves £275 for the name.

The example predicts no sale and quotes no provider fees. Our return guide covers the wider portfolio, including unsold names.

Prepare the selling route before paying

Afternic offers domain listings and landing pages. Sedo documents owner-auction formats. Check eligibility, commission and transfer terms for the route you intend to use.

An operating-business marketplace should not be treated as interchangeable inventory for bare domains. A proposed website build adds a separate development budget and workload.

Before checkout, try writing the proposed two-sentence listing. If you cannot explain the name’s appeal without unsupported performance claims, revisit the buyer thesis before spending.

Verify control and maintain a review date

After acquisition, confirm the correct registration in the expected account, secure access and record renewal information. Publish a clear listing describing the actual asset and supported uses.

Before renewal, evaluate credible interest, current evidence and holding costs. Retain, reprice or release the name accordingly. A useful flipping purchase is disciplined and reviewable; it is not made risk-free by being easy to register.
