A domain’s worth depends on the transaction and use being considered. A patient retail asking range, an investor’s immediate offer and the value of retaining the address for your own project are different questions.
Define the decision before combining tools or metrics. Keep the registration separate from any functioning website or business attached to it.
Record the exact asset and purpose
Write the spelling, extension, registrar, renewal date and continuing charge. State whether you are buying, selling, renewing or considering development, and which assets would actually transfer.
Our scope guide explains why a naming estimate cannot stand in for an operating-business valuation.
Describe useful qualities without fixed premiums
Assess pronunciation, spelling, natural phrase structure and extension fit. Identify independent buyer uses and inexpensive alternatives. A short address can be ambiguous, while a longer descriptive one can serve a clear task.
Keywords and registration age do not automatically produce a higher price or ranking. Review history and relevant identities instead of adding a standard “older domain” premium.
Use the evaluation guide to compare project usefulness with market evidence.
Build a range from relevant comparisons
Research completed sales with similar extensions, naming patterns and commercial uses. Preserve sale dates and channels and explain material differences. Unsold asking prices are a different reference.
GoDaddy provides domain estimates, and EstiBot documents appraisal research. Treat their results as opinions to examine rather than guaranteed exit prices.
Our worksheet helps keep comparisons and uncertainty together. A public authority score is neither a Google rating nor a currency valuation.
Review history and actual observations
Inspect earlier uses and important referring pages. Determine whether relevant references still exist and which old addresses they target. Public traffic estimates cannot prove continuing visitors after transfer.
Acquisition does not grant rights to reproduce former content or use another organisation’s identity. Keep missing evidence visible instead of describing the name as certified clean.
Compare sale, retention and development costs
For a hypothetical £800 sale with £120 charges, net proceeds are £680 before acquisition, holding and tax. Compare that with the cost and purpose of keeping the name, rather than an appraisal alone.
Development adds content, hosting and maintenance work. It may create a new operating asset, but does not automatically maximise value. An auction also requires suitable participation rather than guaranteeing the highest imaginable price.
Document the decision and review date
Separate a price you could accept today from a patient asking price. If enquiries are absent, record that observation alongside the estimated range; it is useful evidence about the selling route, although it cannot prove that no suitable buyer exists.
Choose an asking strategy, purchase ceiling or renewal decision based on current evidence. Our return guide keeps costs and unsold inventory in view.
Record what would change the assessment: a credible offer, relevant completed sale or changed project need. Domain evaluation is useful when that reasoning remains reviewable, rather than presenting a tool output as permanent worth.
