Moz can help research the backlink history of expired-domain candidates. It does not turn every domain in a link report into an available registration, and a favourable metric does not establish that buying the name will improve rankings.
Use Moz within a wider discovery process: collect suitable candidates, inspect their links and important pages, check their history, then verify the acquisition route separately. This avoids confusing link-index data with registration status.
Begin with domains that fit a project
Build a candidate list from an expired-domain database or a current auction platform. Record the exact name, extension, source listing and date. Decide the intended audience before examining metrics.
A hypothetical conservation website might prioritise names with clear nature-related meanings. An unrelated name with a higher automated authority score would still fail that brief. Our discovery-funnel guide helps organise this first screen.
You can also investigate names encountered during subject research, but an inaccessible site is only a lead. It might remain registered, have a temporary hosting problem or no longer publish a website.
Use Link Explorer to inspect the candidate
Moz’s Link Explorer documentation describes inbound-link, linking-domain, anchor-text and top-page reports. Enter the candidate with an appropriate scope and keep that scope consistent when comparing results.
Start with the referring domains rather than only the total number of links. Many links from a single source tell a different story from references across several independent websites. Record the source and check date with each result.
Use top-page information to identify URLs that attracted links. Those are pages on the analysed site, not automatically a list of expired external domains. Inspect the relevant reports rather than assuming that one tab supplies a complete domain-discovery workflow.
Read authority metrics as comparison signals
Moz describes Domain Authority as its predictive metric; it is not a Google ranking factor. Page Authority concerns an individual page. Neither figure is a guaranteed value transfer after a domain purchase.
Trust Flow belongs to Majestic, as its official glossary explains. Do not attribute it to Moz or treat similarly named metrics from different providers as interchangeable.
Compare like with like and investigate discrepancies. A useful note explains why a candidate deserves inspection, rather than declaring that a particular score makes it a purchase. Your intended use and the underlying evidence still matter.
Open the important source pages
Select a manageable sample of relevant links and visit their source pages. Confirm whether the reference remains present, what the surrounding text says and which old URL it targets. An indexed link record can outlive the page or link itself.
Read anchor text for signs of previous subjects and unexplained commercial changes. Repeated unrelated phrases deserve investigation, but there is no universal ratio that can certify a clean history.
Review archived versions of the candidate across several dates. A site that changed subjects repeatedly may need a different explanation from one with a consistent history. Missing captures and unavailable pages remain evidence gaps.
Verify what Moz cannot establish
Check the current auction listing or registrar availability result. ICANN’s status-code guide explains why expiry, redemption and deletion are different stages.
Check naming conflicts, renewal charges and the total purchase cost. Public link reports cannot confirm actual traffic, previous-owner consent or ownership of archived content. Our research checklist covers the remaining decisions.
Finish with a brief finding: relevant references verified, unresolved history question, or unsuitable for the project. The bulk-metrics walkthrough offers a complementary shortlist process. Moz contributes evidence; it does not replace availability checks or a defensible purchase limit.
Save the source URLs behind your conclusion. On a later review, those notes show which observations remain useful and which need checking again before you commit money.
