Domain brokerage means representing a buyer or seller under an agreed mandate; trading names you own is a different role. For an owner using a broker, the useful task is to organise evidence, prospect work and negotiation within clear approval and cost limits.

Prepare the sale so the broker can explain the asset without unsupported performance claims. A documented service does not guarantee a maximum price or make domain selling an easy income source.

Define the naming asset and buyer use

Confirm the exact registration, control, renewal timing and included assets. Identify plausible independent businesses or projects that could use it without confusion with another identity.

Research relevant completed sales and alternatives, retaining dates and channels. A fashionable keyword or old registration alone does not establish a price premium.

Our worksheet helps create an evidence pack rather than an optimistic appraisal selected because it exceeds the asking price.

Specify what the broker will do

Sedo documents separate buyer and seller services. Ask about the actual assignment, relevant experience, material conflicts and reporting.

Agree exclusivity, duration, termination and any continuing commission obligations. Do not assume the provider handles legal advice, complete traffic verification or every transfer task automatically.

Our hiring guide supports the contract questions.

Set a net sale boundary and approval rules

Record engagement charges, commission, minimum fees and transaction costs. Separate an asking range from minimum acceptable proceeds and specify which terms need your approval.

For a hypothetical £4,000 offer with £600 charges, expected proceeds are £3,400 before acquisition, holding and tax. Compare payment timing and conditions as well as the gross figure.

Our return guide keeps the complete outcome visible. Instalments create a different collection commitment from immediate payment.

Provide accurate marketing information

Describe naming advantages and realistic uses. Label historical observations and public estimates, avoiding promises that the buyer inherits rankings, audiences or a former business.

Maintain consistent public terms and tell the broker about genuine direct enquiries or existing listing obligations. A broad network or more exposure does not itself prove buyer demand.

Prepare completion and a review point

Decide how competing enquiries will be recorded during the mandate. Keep dated offers and their conditions together, and agree who responds so prospects receive consistent information. A higher headline offer may be less useful when it depends on uncertain finance or a long payment schedule.

Agree payment, transfer, included services and acceptance. Escrow.com’s documentation illustrates verification, handover and release where used.

Set a date to review progress and the holding decision. Preserve the work record and outcomes so renewal or relisting can reflect evidence rather than indefinite optimism.

A broker-assisted sale is useful when responsibilities are clear and the result meets supported terms. It does not turn the owner’s portfolio into guaranteed profit merely by adding professional negotiation.
