Domain forwarding sends visitors from one address to another. It can help people reach a relevant business, a sales landing page or a useful resource, but it does not create visitors or guarantee income. Any commercial benefit depends on the audience arriving, the destination and the costs of holding the domain.

Start with an address you control and a specific reason to forward it. A former product address pointing to its replacement has a different purpose from an unused name pointing to a domain-sale page.

Choose a destination that matches the visitor

  • For a domain offered for sale, use a clear landing page explaining what is available and how enquiries work.
  • For a renamed business or product, send visitors to the relevant replacement page.
  • For a marketing campaign, direct the address to the page associated with that campaign.
  • For affiliate content, offer useful context and comply with the programme’s terms rather than silently routing unrelated visitors to a merchant.

A domain parked with advertising is a different arrangement from a redirect. A sales landing page is another option. Afternic’s seller page describes its domain-sales and landing-page offering; review the applicable setup and commission conditions before selecting a route. Our unused-domain selling guide covers preparing the listing.

Configure forwarding and test the real journey

Namecheap’s forwarding instructions distinguish permanent, temporary and masked options. Follow the documentation for your own DNS or hosting provider; a record created in the wrong DNS account will not control the public result.

Test the main address, its www version and any important old paths using the protocols visitors will actually request. HTTPS on the destination does not solve a certificate problem at the source address. Preserve existing email records and avoid removing unrelated services during setup.

Our expired-domain forwarding guide explains historical URL checks. Forwarding every old page to one unrelated commercial destination can disappoint visitors even when the redirect technically works.

Keep marketing transparent

If an affiliate relationship is involved, review the destination’s permissions and disclosure obligations. The ASA’s affiliate-marketing guidance explains that UK marketing within its scope must be obviously identifiable. An opaque forwarded address is not a substitute for clear advertising identification.

Buying an expired name chiefly to manipulate search rankings with low-value content can fall within Google’s spam policies. Old backlinks do not establish current visitors, and neither keyword wording nor a redirect guarantees search visibility.

Measure whether the arrangement earns its keep

Track the outcome that matters: qualified sale enquiries, completed purchases or genuine visits to the relevant service. Use data you are authorised to access. A redirect does not itself provide a full analytics report, and an estimated historic traffic figure is not a record of the new journey.

In a hypothetical month, attributable receipts of £18 with £5 of domain and service costs leave £13 before other expenses and tax. If receipts are zero, those costs still exist. Include setup time, commissions and renewals when assessing the arrangement over a longer period.

Set a review date and a retention rule. Read our domain holding-cost guide before retaining multiple speculative addresses. Keep forwarding when it serves visitors and supports a measurable purpose; revise or discontinue an arrangement that does neither.
