Valuing an expired domain means assessing the registration asset and the evidence supporting its intended use. There is no single true-worth number that guarantees a buyer, inherited traffic or a profitable project.

Build a range with explicit assumptions, then decide a separate acquisition limit. Historical evidence may improve the assessment while still leaving substantial uncertainty.

Define the asset and buyer

Record exact wording, extension and transaction scope. Clarify whether only registration rights transfer or whether a current seller includes specified website assets.

Describe plausible independent uses and alternatives. An investor’s resale case and a business’s operating project can justify different assumptions.

Do not include the former site’s brand, content or revenue simply because a domain once hosted them.

Assess naming usefulness

Check pronunciation, spelling, language and extension fit. Shortness is useful when it reduces friction, but an obscure abbreviation can be less practical than a natural phrase.

Keyword demand may explain a subject without proving demand for the exact address. Identify the buyer case before choosing flattering valuation inputs.

Our naming guide develops those checks.

Review history as evidence and risk

Inspect archived periods, meaningful live references and important destination URLs. Record topic changes, old identities, redirects and missing captures.

The Internet Archive’s usage guide explains capture limitations. Registration age is not automatic proof of continuous useful publication.

Verify traffic and income claims separately. If dependable records are unavailable, value the case without an unsupported activity premium.

Find comparable transactions

NameBio provides sales research and DN Journal reports disclosed transactions. Match wording, extension, purpose and available timing.

Keep investor sales, business purchases and developed-site deals distinct. A seller’s asking price is another category, not a completed transaction.

Our appraisal workflow explains a range with confidence limits. Sparse comparisons should reduce confidence.

Consult models without replacing judgement

EstiBot describes a statistical comparison model. Save provider, date and currency, and investigate a substantial disagreement with your own evidence.

Authority scores are separate research signals. A large figure does not establish market demand, availability or freedom from rights issues.

Check the commitment before buying

Confirm the current acquisition route and full charges. Include renewals, required publishing work and relevant transaction expenses.

The WIPO UDRP guide explains abusive-registration disputes. A positive appraisal does not clear the intended use.

Our costs guide supports a separate spending ceiling.

Write a reviewable conclusion

Keep the value range and purchase ceiling in separate fields. The first describes your opinion; the second includes your budget constraints and allowance for uncertainty.

State buyer context, estimated range, confidence, observed evidence and unanswered questions. Identify which new information would change the assessment.

The result should support buying, deferring or rejecting a candidate, including the case where no inherited performance appears. Valuation improves the decision when it explains the remaining uncertainty rather than concealing it.
