An email spam-checking tool can inspect a test message or apply a filtering model. It cannot guarantee that every recipient’s provider places the campaign in the inbox. Choose it according to the diagnostic question you need to answer.

Separate message-content checks, authentication review, sender reputation and observed delivery. A product that covers one area should not be described as a complete assessment merely because it returns a score.

Define the input and required evidence

Decide whether you need to test the message produced by your email platform, inspect delivered headers or review a server-side filter configuration. Keep the sending route and relevant domains explicit.

Check how the service receives data, retains reports and handles confidential material. Use representative test content without unnecessary customer or account information. A public result link can create a different disclosure risk from a private internal report.

Compare documented tool types

Mail-tester provides a test-message workflow. Its FAQ explains report scope and limits, including why a perfect result does not guarantee placement in another inbox.

Apache SpamAssassin is an open-source filtering platform with a scoring framework. Its administrative deployment and configuration are different from submitting one test message to a hosted service.

These are documented examples, not accuracy rankings. Do not infer integration with a particular email platform unless the tool’s current documentation confirms it.

Evaluate the scoring explanation

Look for findings you can investigate, rather than only a headline number. Determine the direction, range and purpose of the score. Different tools can use higher values to mean different things.

Where available, review a sample report before subscribing. Check whether it distinguishes missing tests from successful checks and explains how to investigate each result.

A content rule, missing authentication result and reputation issue require different responses. Avoid an advertised “spam probability” interpretation unless the provider actually supports that meaning.

Our email-score walkthrough illustrates interpreting a particular test. It is distinct from a Moz SEO research score.

Check workflow and continuing cost

Review permitted test volume, current charges, report availability and relevant integration conditions. A free software licence does not remove hosting or administration work for a deployed filter.

Ask whether the output captures the real message sent by your platform, including its formatting and links. A pasted draft may miss changes introduced later by the sending service.

Connect tests with receiver requirements

Gmail’s sender guidance documents applicable authentication and sending requirements. A favourable content test does not establish recipient permission, healthy sending behaviour or compliance with every receiver’s rules.

Our campaign assessment covers those broader checks, and the DNS guide explains service records.

Select the tool that produces useful evidence within an appropriate workflow and budget. Assess observed bounces, complaints and delivery afterwards instead of treating the test as the campaign’s final verdict.
