Choose an expired-domain buying service by the acquisition task it actually performs. A broker negotiates with an owner, a backorder provider attempts acquisition after release, and an auction platform supplies inventory under its own rules. A research list is a different service again.

A useful provider comparison records coverage, commitments, delivery conditions and unresolved responsibilities. Testimonials alone cannot establish that a particular domain fits your project.

Match the provider to the candidate’s stage

Check the live registration or listing before choosing a service. ICANN’s status-code guide explains why expiry, redemption and deletion are different situations.

For a release attempt, read a provider’s specific backorder rules. Dynadot’s documentation describes its workflow; a request does not guarantee ownership. For a still-registered owner sale, compare brokerage instead.

Our buy-service overview explains those roles. Do not pay for a service simply because it uses the term “expired domains”.

Confirm coverage and real delivery terms

Establish supported extensions, source registrars and any candidate deadline. Ask what happens if the original registrant renews, the provider fails to acquire the name or several customers request it.

For an expiry auction, read the actual platform agreement. Namecheap’s market terms are one example of documented renewal and completion conditions.

Record the account destination and registration period expected after delivery. A favourable search result, invoice or auction win is a different stage from confirmed control of the registration.

Compare the full commitment

Identify initial charges, acquisition fees, possible bidding exposure and recurring renewal costs. Check how unsuccessful or cancelled attempts affect fees, refunds or credits. Avoid assuming that another provider’s policy applies.

In a hypothetical £300 allowance, £40 of assistance charges and £60 of holding reserve leave £200 for the name. A low advertised request fee is not evidence that the eventual auction fits that budget.

Use our registration cost guide to complete the comparison. Read instalment or financing terms separately where offered.

Specify research and support responsibilities

Ask which checks the provider performs and what evidence you receive. Historical research, naming conflicts, backlink inspection and verified traffic analysis should not be assumed from a purchase service.

Identify the support route for a missing delivery, disputed invoice or account problem. Published procedures and clear responsibilities are more useful than a broad claim of knowledgeable staff.

Record what counts as completed service: an owner contact attempt, a successful catch or registrar-account delivery. Those different outcomes should not share one unexplained completion label.

Our research checklist helps cover the checks that remain yours. No provider can promise inherited rankings or profitable resale merely by supplying a registration.

Make the comparison before authorising payment

Choose the service whose current terms match the candidate and budget. Preserve the relevant documentation and date with the acquisition record. If coverage or obligations remain unclear, resolve that specific issue or select an alternative route.
