The cost of buying a domain depends on the acquisition route and the continuing registration terms. A new registration, an expired-domain auction and a negotiated owner sale can have very different initial charges. None should be assessed from the first displayed price alone.
Build a budget for the name you actually want and the period you intend to hold it. Avoid universal price ranges that omit premium renewals, assistance fees or transaction costs.
New registrations: compare initial and recurring prices
Check the supported extension, initial charge, renewal price and registration period. Establish whether the name has premium conditions and whether an advertised discount depends on a subscription or additional years.
Hosting and email are separate services. Add them only where the project needs them, and record their recurring charges independently. Domain registration does not by itself provide a functioning website.
For a hypothetical £12 first year followed by two £28 renewals, the three-year registration cost is £68. Those figures are illustrative, not current registrar prices. Our cost guide explains the inputs.
Expiry auctions: calculate the payable amount
An auction bid may be only part of the charge. Read the listing and provider terms for renewal, acquisition fees and the registration period delivered. Check required account or membership costs where applicable.
Namecheap’s market agreement illustrates provider-specific expired-sale conditions. Use the documentation attached to your actual auction rather than assuming all platforms follow one process.
Our platform comparison distinguishes auctions and backorders. A potential win is a commitment to budget, not proof of a completed registration.
Owner purchases: include negotiation and completion
For a registered name bought from its owner, agree what the price includes. A website or business bundled with the domain requires a different assessment from a bare registration.
Include any broker charge, payment-service fee, currency expense and applicable transfer costs. Escrow.com’s guidance explains its domain transaction stages; check the current fee quotation for the transaction rather than assuming a fixed rate.
In a hypothetical £2,000 owner purchase, £200 assistance and £50 transaction charges raise the initial commitment to £2,250 before renewals or development.
Allow for holding and research costs
Record research services, future renewals and a period without resale income. A low acquisition charge can still create an unsuitable recurring commitment, especially across several names.
Use our appraisal worksheet to assess price evidence separately. A seller’s asking amount and an automated estimate are not guaranteed sale values.
Set a total boundary before checkout
Write the full expected commitment and the unresolved charges. Confirm the exact spelling, renewal conditions and included assets before paying.
If the total exceeds the project’s allowance, compare another name or acquisition route. The affordable domain is the one whose naming fit and continuing costs you can support, rather than whichever offer has the lowest introductory figure.
