A domain crawler follows relevant web links and collects domain candidates within its configured scope. It does not scan every available name on the internet, and finding a broken link is not proof that the linked domain can be registered.
Use crawling for discovery, then apply independent status, history and project checks. That separation matters when software encounters timeouts, redirects or services restricting automated requests.
Choose a bounded discovery task
Define the project topic, seed sites or supported search inputs, extensions and budget. Choose sources likely to reference useful material in that topic rather than starting an unbounded crawl.
Domain Hunter Gatherer’s official expired-domain page describes its discovery workflows. DomainNexus and DHG share a publishing family.
Check current plan scope and documentation for the function you use. A list service and an auction search are not necessarily web crawlers simply because they also display domains.
Understand the observations
A crawler may encounter a reference to an external domain, inspect a response and collect a status signal. Additional metrics may require separate data sources or lookups.
Keep discovery URL, candidate domain, observation time and uncertain response visible. A failed request should remain a failed request, rather than becoming an available-domain label.
Where the source has terms or restrictions for automated access, follow them and the tool’s supported configuration. Avoid treating blocked requests as proof that the target has expired.
Filter for project relevance
Remove duplicates and obvious spelling or extension mismatches. Ask whether the name can serve an independent useful site. A strong-looking metric should not override an unsuitable identity or rights concern.
Moz describes DA as a comparative metric rather than a Google ranking factor. Keep provider and target scope visible when enriching the shortlist.
Our metrics guide explains the limitations. A crawl’s domain list is not itself a quality certificate.
Inspect the reference that led you there
Open the source page, read the surrounding context and check the destination. Determine whether it refers to information, an event, a former organisation or another identity your project cannot adopt.
Review important destinations and archived pages across available periods. Missing captures leave gaps. Registration does not automatically include old content or branding.
Our backlink workflow connects crawler discovery with manual evidence checks.
Confirm today’s acquisition route
Use the responsible registrar or auction venue to establish current availability, charges and terms. A candidate may be registered, approaching deletion or listed elsewhere despite the initial crawl result.
Our deleted-domain guide explains why expiry and registration availability are distinct. Recheck near the purchase.
Assess the intended SEO use
Google’s expired-domain abuse policy addresses repurposing primarily to manipulate rankings with little user value. Finding a domain through relevant links does not guarantee a permissible or successful publishing plan.
Budget for original useful work and a case with no inherited traffic. Record why the name fits, what the crawl revealed and which questions remain. The crawler’s practical benefit is efficient discovery; the purchase and site’s future performance still need their own evidence.
