Domain trading profit depends on completed proceeds after acquisition, holding and selling costs. A sample asking price or appraisal estimate cannot establish that a particular name will produce a margin.

Use a cost model alongside naming and buyer evidence. Keep unsold inventory in view when deciding how much to commit to the next purchase.

Research the name and potential use

Assess natural wording, spelling, extension fit and plausible applications. Check similar brands and intended use; WIPO’s UDRP guide explains relevant dispute questions.

For a previously used name, inspect archived subjects and important live link sources. Age or a vendor score cannot establish a monetary premium automatically.

Separate evidence from price expectations

NameBio’s documentation describes historical-sale data and filters. Compare relevant completed domain-only transactions, keeping asking prices and business acquisitions separate.

GoDaddy’s GoValue guidance explains estimate limits. A displayed valuation is not a buyer commitment.

The price-estimation guide helps turn those observations into a range.

Verify acquisition and record every cost

Confirm the actual registrar result or sale listing, exact asset, required charges, renewal terms and delivery conditions. Missing website or DNS information is not availability proof.

The buying-routes guide distinguishes registrations, owner sales and expiry opportunities.

Record preparation, promotion and necessary services rather than treating the bid as the complete investment. Keep work time separate from paid expenses.

Compare a sale with a longer holding

Sedo’s current prices illustrate route-dependent fees and minimums. Use actual applicable charges before accepting an offer.

The following figures are hypothetical. They compare the same £400 sale and assumed 20% selling charge with two holding-cost cases.

ItemInitial holding caseExtra-renewal case
Acquisition£100£100
Renewals£25£50
Preparation£15£15
Total specified costs£140£165
Proceeds after £80 fee£320£320
Difference before other costs and tax£180£155

The later sale remains uncertain. If it does not occur, the name remains a holding commitment rather than realised proceeds.

With only the assumed percentage fee, initial break-even is £140 divided by 0.8, or £175. The extra-renewal case needs £165 divided by 0.8, or £206.25. Fixed charges would raise those figures. Neither number establishes that a buyer will pay it.

Prepare accurate sale terms

State exact name, contents, registrar, expiry, price or offer format and restrictions. Describe plausible uses without ranking or income promises.

Read exclusivity and automatic-sale commitments before using multiple listings. Follow documented settlement steps, verify instructions through the service and remove conflicting listings after commitment.

Review the portfolio before another purchase

The ROI guide includes unsold names and continuing costs. Record genuine offers and compare actual results with the original buyer case.

A useful trading process can improve cost control and decisions while recognising that no price list or keyword category guarantees a profit.
