When buying a domain to flip, prepare the resale case before negotiating the purchase. The useful question is whether the name, evidence and total cost support a plausible exit. A discount against an automated estimate is not enough.
Use a short purchase memo for every serious candidate. It should record the buyer thesis, price evidence, unresolved issues and the terms under which you would proceed.
Describe who could use the name
Identify several plausible independent businesses or projects. Explain what the wording and extension offer them: clear meaning, memorable spelling or a useful category identity. Avoid a thesis that depends on confusion with an existing brand.
Compare inexpensive alternatives a buyer could choose. A name may be attractive without being indispensable. That distinction matters when deciding how much capital to commit.
Use our appraisal worksheet to collect comparable completed sales and explain their relevance. Retain limitations rather than selecting only the highest prices.
Determine how the acquisition would happen
An available registration, owner negotiation and registrar expiry auction create different obligations. Confirm the current route and exact listing before making an offer or bid.
For an owner sale, establish what assets are included and how control will be transferred. For an auction, read binding-bid, cancellation and delivery conditions. Our platform comparison explains the acquisition types.
ICANN’s status guide supplies lifecycle context. An offline website or expired date alone cannot establish that the name is available for a new registration.
Complete the checks before agreeing terms
Review naming conflicts, archived uses and important source links. If traffic or revenue is claimed, distinguish verified evidence from public estimates and determine whether an operating website is included.
Record which issue would cause rejection and which could justify a lower price. Missing evidence is not a favourable result. Avoid assuming that a provider’s willingness to sell certifies clean history.
Negotiate using a total-cost boundary
Choose an initial proposal and a maximum commitment privately. Include assistance fees, transaction charges and a holding reserve. Do not reveal the ceiling merely because the seller asks your budget.
Suppose, hypothetically, a £600 allowance includes £50 transaction costs and £100 holding reserve. The remaining £450 is the acquisition boundary. An agreed £500 purchase would exceed that plan before a single renewal occurs.
Keep the discussion professional and specific about price, included assets and completion. Your sunk research time does not increase what the next buyer would pay. Our return guide covers the cost calculation.
Arrange completion and the sale plan
Escrow.com’s published process illustrates payment verification, domain transfer and fund release for transactions using that service. Follow the actual agreed provider’s terms before releasing control or payment.
After acquisition, verify the registrar account and renewal date. Prepare an accurate listing, choose a supported selling channel and set a review date before renewal. The memo should also state what happens if the domain does not sell: retain within budget, reprice or release.
